Explosively exciting start of a new series! I have to admit that I do love a good “catch the serial killer” book, and this one is great! The killer was uniquely evil, and the hero, Jack Caffery, is endearing, slightly flawed, and very human.

One of the best things about the book is the fact that Jack is haunted by the unsolved abduction (and suspected murder) of his younger brother. The suspect is a pedophile neighbor. The detective work to solve the serial killer crime is engrossing, and is blended with the side story dealing with Jack and the evil neighbor--superbly done!

Recommend to anyone who likes serial killer books, detective books, or suspense/thrillers. After reading this I went out and bought all the books in the series!

Birdman Mo Hayder 9780440236160 Books Reviews

Before saying more about the debased acts of the lunatics depicted in this mystery, I freely acknowledge that I enjoyed the book and the author's writing style. Scenes and characters were described with frightening imagination and the author often made me feel like I was actually there witnessing some of the horrendous skin-crawling acts. I usually don't crave such depraved entertainment in a novel but this degenerate action was part of the fabric of the mystery and necessary to it.
For most of the book I found myself uncertain as to what would transpire next, but that's exactly what I expect from a good thriller/mystery. However, I feel the ending was a little contrived, somewhat predictable and eventually less than credible. Still, Mo Hayder kept me cringing and turning pages throughout, so she must be doing something right.
This book was extremely well written, but I'm afraid it's too graphic in its description of torture for my taste. I was drawn in enough to want to finish it, but found myself skipping much of the final pages due to the utter violence being depicted. I'm usually able to handle a lot of this because I can mentally "shut down" when it gets too gory, but this book wouldn't let me do that. Maybe that's the sign of a great writer, but I don't think I'll be able to read any more of Mo Hayder's books. This book is not for the faint of heart and goes well beyond the normal thriller in my opinion.
The writing is great and the plotline excellent in this story of a troubled detective hunting a bizarre serial killer. Detective Inspector Jack Caffery is a man with troubled relationships, poor boundaries who is obsession with a pedophile neighbor home he suspects of having killed his brother. This, however, is only the backstory for a complex plot involving a series of the most unsual crimes I have ever come across. Hayder keeps a high level of suspense and an unexpected ending.
The problem is with the lengthy and detailed focus on every gory detail of these unusual crimes to the point of revulsion. It's one thing to have a sick criminal but another to spend page after page, chapter after chapter examining that sickness and how it manifests in the crimes in obsessive detail. I won't read another book by this author.
Detective Inspector Jack Caffery has just caught his first murder in his new posting. A young girl has been found buried on a construction site. At first, it's believed it might be a medical student's prank gone wrong, as Jack is told the body has been autopsied. However, this was no professional autopsy but one of butchery. The corpse is made up heavily just like a doll, and the body was mutilated in addition to the autopsy.

Things get worse. By the next day, four more bodies are found on the site. Jack has definite ideas about the killer, but not everyone in the department shares his ideas. There are those who want this to be an easy case, perhaps a drug deal gone wrong. Instead, it is what every department fears, a case of tracking down a serial sexual sadist.

Jack has personal issues to work through in addition to his professional ones. He is haunted by his childhood and a trauma that occurred then. He is currently attempting to extradite himself from a romantic relationship that isn't going anywhere, and he also finds himself attracted to a witness in the case. Can he put aside his personal feelings and catch the killer before he strikes again?

Mo Hayder has written a fascinating murder mystery. The details are grisly, and this book is not for the fainthearted. Still, Caffery is a fascinating character, and the unfolding of the mystery will have the reader guessing over and over again as the story winds and twists into surprising locations. The reader will finish this book ready for more of Caffery's story in later novels. This book is recommended for mystery readers.
This is well written, has an interesting story but, unless you are fluent in English (as in British) street speak and slang it is almost impossible to understand. I have read just about everything Ken Bruen has written with no problem and while some of the terms used here are easy to guess the meaning of, most are almost incomprehensible to a non Brit. Stopped reading about 25 - 30% thru, just to hard to understand. Pity of it is, it read fine and seemed like a great story
As far as contemporary mystery writers go, it just doesn't get better than this. The author's skills are almost scary good. All of the characters are intriguing...both major and minor. The plot is handled beautifully. I did, however, find most of the female characters somewhat less than exemplary but that could be said about the men. So, would I read the other books? I'm not sure. The violence was more than one or two degrees to beyond my reading comfort zone. Don't think I always find this a negative, but this author writes too well about actions I just don't want to read about, i.e., torture. So, if you don't read this author's product, you will be missing great writing. However, if you do read it, you will face violence and torture on a level that is unacceptable for me. Sadly, I will not be reading another.
