I enjoyed the story very much, especially because a friend of mine was born there on that horrible day that became known in history as Black Halloween. Hearing the tale from a nurse's point of view, even though fictionalized, made it all the more interesting. I found this bit of historical fiction to be a fine read.Tags : After the Fog (The Donora Story Collection) [Kathleen Shoop] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. After the Fog The Donora Story Collection Kathleen Shoop 9781469935706 Books Reviews
My mom grew up in Donora, PA in the 1920s and 30s. All my life I heard stories about the town she grew up in. "After the Fog" brought the town alive to me in a way that I hadn't experienced before. I felt like I was walking up McKean Avenue or climbing the unending steps up the hills. Life in Donora was hard and one-by-one six of my mom's siblings moved to other locales across the US, until only her oldest sister remained. She lived on Heslep Avenue for nearly 70 years. My early memories of visiting Donora in the 1960s were of the denuded hills across the Monongahela River in Webster Hollow brought on by all the pollution from the mills. As an interesting side note about the fateful weekend of the smog inversion in October 1948, my mom's entire family was down in Washington, DC that week for my parent's wedding, so they all missed it and were possibly spared their lives as a result.
The author really captured a snapshot of the town.
I was amazed to learn how life actually was in a mill town. This book tells you the reality without being depressing- in fact- the ending was great. Highly recommended!
Oh how I loved Rose, she tried so hard to give her kids the life she knew was best for them she lost the emotional attachment in the process. Not only was the story of Rose great but the historical story of the fog was fascinating. I loved the learning process Rose went through, and as very satisfied by the ending. I'm look forward to reading more books by Ms Snoop in the future
I am a big fan of Kathleen Shoop. In her novel "After the Fog," she weaves a very plausible story into the facts of the Donora, PA steel and zinc mills's toxic chemical emissions that became trapped in the deadly temperature inversion in October of 1948.
Her characters are so real, especially Rose who is her main character. The reason for Rose's personality traits are gradually revealed as the novel progresses, and I found myself loving her and wanting her to put her guard down without losing the strength that she demonstrated in her family and her career.
Kathleen's description of the smog was so vivid, I could virtually smell and taste the acrid chemicals and feel my eyes burning! I am a green-energy freak, so the telling of this event was horrific for me.
Fascinating look at a little known but interesting time in history. The story sweeps you up into a dark time in the industrial evolution of a small mill town and it's effect on this family group. The changes in the country at that time is reflected in the changes in the changes in Rose and her family. It touches on all accepts of the family dynamic, marriages, parenting, work and career, even religion is touched on. I loved it.
This book had me from the first page. I can't remember the last time I read a book that I couldn't put down. The characters in the story brought this historic time to life. The author did a great job of fleshing out the characters of Rose, Henry, and their extended family. I was not aware of the history of Donora or the catastrophic pollution that took place there. This was an amazing way to learn history while seeing how people live with their own past hurts, daily struggles, and finally the real meaning of "family." Though the characters were fictional, the struggles were those that many of us face in day to day life. The book contains some sexual content which is easily skipped over if the reader so desires and there will be no loss on continuity in the story line.
This book grabbed me from inside at the beginning and would not let me go..... I thought I had fallen down the rabbit's hole into my past life all the way back to my childhood! It was one of the most fantastic all nighter reads I have ever had! Some books are like having a best friend and this was it!
